ABOUT

Initiator Gosse Beerda has been involved in repurposing ‘abandoned places’ for nearly thirty years. When the State of the Netherlands decided to sell the Harlingen lighthouse in 1998, he made the highest bid. 'That bid was equal to the average purchase price of a home at the time,' he says. 'Apparently, few people saw its potential.' In repurposing and restoration, Beerda strives for the highest level of quality but will never be tempted into unnecessary or fashionable luxury. Hilda Uphoff, who, together with her husband Patrick, has taken on the management of the Wachter and Ahoy houses, was the first 'lighthouse keeper' at the time.

GARDEN

Each house at the foot of the lighthouse has a part of the shared garden at its disposal. With a comfortable bench. Don't be surprised if a passerby strikes up a conversation over the undulating hedge.

ARCHITECTURE

Ahoy and Wachter are built on remnants of the 16th-century defensive wall of the city of Harlingen. In this part of the city, the built environment is dominated by relatively simple volumes that reveal their intended use through their design. During the restoration and construction of the houses, the architect was given a clear guideline: create a design as if it had always been there.

Huisje Wachter is the former workshop of the grand 19th-century house on the property. For its new purpose, its orientation was rotated ninety degrees, and a dormer was added to unlock the sea view.

Huisje Ahoy is a contemporary interpretation of the 'storage place for bicycles' that once stood here. Visitors to the Wadden Islands, Vlieland and Terschelling, could leave their bicycles here for a fee. The barn-like volume is a reconstruction of the original shed, with the exact and complete development of the trapezoidal plot presenting a challenge for the architect and builder.

The front facade is significantly wider than the rear facade, and the angle of the side facades relative to the front differs by 12 degrees. The result is an organically shaped barn with both a gable roof and a flat roof, and an interior whose construction can only be understood with mathematical talent and above-average spatial insight.
